Beginnings and Endings. There is a line in the Robert McCloskey children’s book “One Morning In Maine” that says, ” A little bit sad about the place they are leaving and a little bit glad about the place they are going.” I think about the children of Omena leaving in the fall to go back to school, how they must be feeling, and how they have felt every fall through the ages.

Laurie Remter recently shared some of her wonderful old photos of the many cousins, uncles, and aunts who shared the cottage called “The Pioneer” since the 1950’s and before. They would stay at The Pioneer Cottage and/or at their grandparents cottage next door (now the Leathery cottage), wherever they would fit.

I’m sure they all, adults as well as children, will miss the swimming, fishing, golfing, and playing with cousins when they return to work and school in the fall. Some may be glad not to have to do an hour of fixing up, painting, keeping up the cottage that they had to do for an hour every day before they went swimming (according to Laurie). But Ingalls Bay will remain in their minds all winter long like a beacon calling them home.

Thank you Laurie Remter for all her stories and photos. All photos are courtesy of Laurie Remter.
